I’m Susan McNerney, a writer based in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Originally from the redwood country of Northern California, I write fiction and nonfiction set in a variety landscapes, especially the far American West. Northern Word is my home on the web, and features my travel photography and travelogues, as well as commentary on literary trends, live theater reviews, and thoughts on the writing process.
I’ve recently finished my MFA in Writing at Hamline University in St. Paul.

So who’s that odd spotted fellow running around Northern Word?
That’s Francis, and he just sort of showed up. Francis came out of some cartooning I did for my own amusement back in college, and recently he decided to move back in and take over the blog.
As far as I can tell he keeps an eye on things. I have no idea why he is naked in the banner but otherwise clothed, but perhaps he will tell us at some point.
Francis also occupies my twitter feed. He still lets me post, but I’m not sure how long that will last. He’s also an excellent cook.
