On a ten day trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota, you might think you’d run out of things to do – and you’d be wrong. There are few places in America, particularly in the American West, where you can plant yourself in a single spot and fill ten days with short excursions; even in some of my favorite places, you’d start running low unless you had a long backpacking trip planned in the mix.
But the Black Hills has an odd combination of relative isolation from other tourist areas – it’s a long drive to Colorado, or even Yellowstone – and a high concentration of sights and activities within its own borders. This means you can do what we did: park yourself and go exploring. And that’s a stress-free way to enjoy a vacation.

So click below to explore South Dakota and Northeast Wyoming with me. You’ll find granite peaks, lush streams, wild horses, itchy bison, deep caves, and unexpected back roads full of pronghorn. On to the Black Hills!
