Crex Meadows, a wildlife area in Northwestern Wisconsin, near Grantsburg, is a stunning spot on a fall morning. This is the sanctuary where several Whooping Cranes are being rehabilitated with ultralight planes to guide them on their migration. We didn’t see the Whooping Cranes, but we did see thousands of Sandhill Cranes getting ready to migrate south.
The sound of the birds is impressive – like thousands of small cars honking at once. It’s like a traffic jam, except a bird jam.

There are thousands gathered here at this time of year.

I want to note these images are not color corrected – that’s really what the light looked like on that fall morning.
